Second grade class at Schuster Elementary spent several weeks on a project in which they used technology, role played, researched, wrote papers, & produced a product (a movie). They learned a lot! The movie, Martin Luther King Travels to the Future, afforded these 2nd graders the opportunity to learn about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. They also learned about several other individuals who played major roles in the history of this country. Ruby Bridges was one of the people they studied. They learned that Oprah Winfrey reunited Mrs. Henry (Ruby's teacher) and Ruby Bridges on her show in 1996 (a scene in the 2nd graders' movie).

Schuster second graders' final product: Martin Luther King Travels to the Future:
Fantastic! The project on Martin Luther King, Jr. is a great example of project based learning. Students/people are more prone to learn and remember what they learn when they constructing the learning. Kudos to the teachers who are pushing the rigor and relevance--if only middle and secondary teachers would understand and appreciate the value of project based learning. Great job by those children
